The Study of Signs

I went on an assignment to study the signs displayed in the stores. This offered some firsthand knowledge of various signage and graphic styles. Exploring the methods retailers are using for mounting and displaying signs in a wide range of real-life situations helps you understand the industry better and track trend development.

I went to five different stores and chose one sign to write about. I found that the colors and the shape are very important. They differentiate the stores and some are even identifiable by the sizes and shapes of there signs. What I mean by this is, see the Bath and Bodywork sign. It’s a blue square that is propped on the table. Those of you that shop at BBW know this sign well and can call it out from a bunch of images and associate it with the store.

Stockton CA, Birth home of the Fantastic 4!

I live in the city of Stockton. It was the runner-up for the state capital. It is a very large city that has the advantage of being the home to the largest inland seaport in California. The Port of Stockton is the easternmost inland seaport in California. It is also the 13th largest city and the 64th largest city in the United States. Stockton is definitely an individual.  It’s a town so rich in history that the downtown area has landmarks around every corner. Three-times named an All-America City: 1999, 2004, 2015, I think Stockton is a very masculine city.

The city of Stockton has always been known for a city that needs help. Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics, named it the official birthplace of the fantastic four. According to Lee he wanted to draw positive attention to the town he was living in, and call attention to comics. Overall the city is full of culture and people with different religious beliefs.

Fashion Brand Assortment

When starting a new fashion brand it is important to analyze your assortment, but why is it so important?

It is important to analyze your assortment because staying attractive to your target market determines the success of the business. Taking into consideration the Market, competitive and environmental factors is also part of the planning process.

Kate Spade New York is the brand I am doing research on right now. They have a massive assortment. They sell jewelry, handbags, fragrances, bedding, home décor, kitchenware, stationery, office supplies, kids and women’s clothing.

Basic items in a line are essential to giving the customer a good assortment. Naturally seeing these items on a season to season basis will get boring is they look the same. To spice them up, adding an assortment of new bright bold colors is a way to keep the customers interested. Also selecting from the colors that are in trend will help drive sells up. Another way to spark interested is to add small embellishments to these items and sell small pendants that will enhance the pieces.

Four Trends Impacting Fashion

Millennial’s have a lot to do with fast fashion. They want it all at incredibly low prices. There are several companies that have been able to shorten their lead-time. They bring in merchandise every two weeks. The prices on the clothing are very low but the quality is not always that great. This feels like disposable fashion, you wear it once or twice then go back and get something new. These are definitely not classic, timeless pieces that you can wear forever or would like to.

Technology has become a part of everyone’s life. Indeed, it is in the fashion industry. Many retailers have set up their online stores and are learning new ways to make it appealing to the consumers by offering efficient delivery methods. Technology has become a tool for consumers. From finding the best prices to being able to shop at almost any store from the comfort of your home.  3-D printing has become a big part of the fashion and apparel industry. Many designers have already begun to showcase what they can do with a 3-D printer and a great imagination. According to 3-D printing has opened the possibilities of using designs that are being used in aerospace and automotive. It has sparked dreams of being able to print our clothes from home that will be able to reflect our mood.

Industry 4.0 is another major trend that will impact the fashion industry. Industry 4.0 will be when everything from systems, data, and machines are all in the cloud. They are integrating the internet with manufacturing.  It will help predict trends and boost performances for retailers and manufacturers. It will not only be useful in the retail industry but can be used in several other businesses.

China has been the leading export market for years, now with its increase in production cost, many think that it will not be long before they get demoted. They have recently been talking about making factories in other countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Bangladesh. I believe it is an incredibly revolutionizing move for China. They are creating their own factories in other countries known to have lower production cost. This will be very good for them, being able to regulate the companies and make sure that their standards are being met. If China has good ethical values this can be amazing and open up a new door for them as leaders in exporting. It can also bring up several other political issues such as pay restrictions and building permits.

These four trends are defiantly revolutionizing. The “see now, buy now” option has made a whole new market for consumers. Customers want their items as quickly as possible, with the best quality and for the best prices. It was imminent for a revolution to take place.

Best Nail Artist in North Carolina!

I had the pleasure of interviewing the best nail Artist on the rise, and owner of Gloria’s Nail Bar from Siler City North Carolina the amazing Gloria Borrayo. We discuss her glorious career from the beginning to the present, and the many great opportunities the future has in store for her. Gloria got her first set of nails done when she was 14 years old in California. This is where it all began.

Tell us about your career. Where did it start? How did you discover your talent?

After the first experience, I was so intrigued to figure out how to do them myself. I started to practice doing my own nails. After high school, I went to school for nails and got my certification. It took me two months to finish the course. I didn’t really know that I was going to do nails as a career I just knew I liked doing my own nails. I always thought I would be too nervous to do other peoples nails.  I worked at 3 different locations before I finally just decided I’d work on my own.

Who were the biggest inspirations for your nail technician career?

Mary Negron is honestly one of my biggest inspirations. She is a nail artist as well as a mentor and an international educator. She travels a lot to Nigeria and she has a salon there as well. She is such a positive person and she is so humble. Ever since I’ve followed her on all social media she’s always followed and added me back. A person like her with so much world experience acknowledges me. I am still so grateful for her positive influence in my life. She always responds to me when I have any questions. She is such a giver and travels all over the world spreading love and doing what she loves to do. Everything she does is just so genuine and I hope to be at least half as great as she is and hopefully I can have the honor of meeting her in person one day.

Wow, she is an amazing artist! I checked out her face book page and just love her work! She sounds like a great inspiration, I am glad you found her.
What do you enjoy most about your nail technician career?

This is honestly my favorite question because the answer is simple, I love being my own boss! It’s something like no other. I set my own schedule and times for work. No one is over my head telling me what to do and telling me how to do things. I run my own salon, just me by myself. I work only by appointments so it’s easy for me to know if ill have a busy day or a short day. I usually do about 2-3 busy days In the week and the other days I will take a couple people in. (those are my slow days) but in the three busy days, I make my weeks total. I am okay with my slow days because I do not like to overwork myself. The point of my career is to work however I want so I do try to take some days to relax and have my back recuperate from my busy days. (I hunch over a lot) I also always set a goal for every week and I usually try to meet that goal. It also motivates me to work. I also enjoy that doing nails isn’t just a form of income, for me, it’s a passion because ever since I can remember I’ve loved art and creating stuff with my hands. I always refer to myself as a nail artist because I do consider my career as a form of art.

I love your response! Being your own boss is amazing. You get to balance your life with your passion.
What are some of your personal and/or professional goals for the future?

I definitely want to become a nail instructor. I feel like the nail school I attended was okay, but it lacked creativity. Everything I know how to do I’ve taught myself. I knew how to do acrylics way before I went to school for it. Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook have been my teachers in the growth process of my career. A personal goal of mine is to become a teacher, teach a group of students to do nails the way I do them and have them work at my salon. Of course, I wouldn’t work in my older days but I’d like to leave a group of people that I’d trust to run the salon for me.

You would be an amazing instructor! Teaching monthly seminars around the US would benefit many aspiring nail artist, think about it. You would still be your own boss and now you would be helping many that are seeking the knowledge you have.
It’s always fun to ask this question; if not a Nail Tech what line of work do you think you would be in?

I was so indecisive of what I wanted to do with my life when I graduated high school. I went to college to study criminal justice, so I think I’d probably be in the law enforcement field by now. It’s not something I EVER thought of doing. It was interesting to me but definitely was a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, I quit college but I quit to go to nail school so it wasn’t all that much of a loss. I am happy with the path I chose.

Great choice! I am happy you are following your heart.

Thank you for your time, Gloria. Any final message to the many Gloria’s  Nail Bar fans?

My advice to anyone out there is to do something that you truly love to do and are passionate for as opposed to working a 9-5 job that you’re miserable at. There’s no better feeling than being your own boss and making your own money and not having to report yourself to anyone BUT the person staring back in the mirror. Always stay humble no matter where life takes you. Whether it’s the road to success and you become famous or you stay in your small town where you were born and raised in. Never let that change who you are and never forget where you started. I started from the bottom because it’s been a struggle since then and I am nowhere close to where I want to be yet but I can honestly say I am in a better place. Thank God!

That is great advice! Thank you again for your time and all your amazing work, I really enjoyed this fabulous time with you!

Singing Luna on the Rise

I had the pleasure of interviewing professional Singer, from Santa Barbara California the amazing Luna. Enjoy!

When & why did you first start singing?

I started singing in church. I’m really unsure of the age that I started singing, I might have been six. The reason why I started singing, I remember this woman she had come from another church to sing to us and I was completely just blown away by how her voice sounded and not only her voice but the feelings that she was giving me. I’m pretty sure that she was giving everybody else there. I remember just praying and begging and just asking God, “I want to be blessed with a talent like that, I want to be able to sing like her, if not at least be able to reach people with my voice and music”. I began singing around the house since I was very religious at that time, I was just singing a lot of gospel music by myself. I didn’t really want anybody else to hear me, I was always at home. One day my step-dad heard me and said that I sounded pretty good and since that compliment, I started singing at church.

Where would you most like to perform?
I haven’t really put much thought into where I would love to perform. Since I’m just starting out, I’m just seeing where the music takes me. I hope it does get to that point where music is my number one priority because I’d be extremely happy with that.
Who would you most like to open for?
I would like to open for Lauryn Hill. I’d be really excited to open up for anybody that’s been extremely successful in the music business.
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be a police officer by now. I’ve always wanted to be catching bad people but also helping people. I know that being a cop isn’t just about giving people tickets and arresting people I think to be a police officer, you have to be active within your community.
If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
I think when I established myself in music, I would definitely want to venture out into rock because growing up I used to listen to a lot of like alternative rock metal because that genre means a lot to me.
Any final advice to your fans?
Advice? Don’t let any criticism or anything like that stop you from doing what you want to do. I’m also going to be blunt, you actually have to be serious about it. I probably wasted a lot of time just daydreaming about doing music and not really putting it into action. I feel if I would have stopped daydreaming I’d probably be where I want to be. Don’t waste any time! Start working on what you want to do. Work on your passion. Time doesn’t stop for anybody and you know in a blink of an eye, you can be 40 years old and be like f*** what the hell have I been doing?! where’d all the time go?

Best Store of the Summer!

My current favorite retail store is Old Navy. The great quality of the clothing and the way they set up the store draws me into the environment. The store and website stand out among other retailers because of its competitive prices and great quality in clothing. Also, the advertising ads are fun and display the prices of the clothing, most retailers do not do this in their ads. Here are some examples of what I mean.

The huge windows they have attracts me because I can see all the front section of the store from the outside. While standing outside I can see the new pieces they have on display and the sales they have going on. This draws me into the store. While I am inside, I see the prices hanging from every fixture. This is appealing to me because I can look at the price and look at the garment and if I like it I can grab my size and try it on. If I don’t I can just continue to walk around the store. The flow of the fixtures is also appealing to me. I love how they set up the store, it feels welcoming and family friendly.
